Unintentionally low impact tourism
How a trip to Auckland this week turned into an unintentionally low-impact travel experience:
- Booked an Uber - happened to get picked up in a Tesla.
- Visited Vessev HQ where they're building electric foiling boats (ok this bit was planned and intentional but the future possibilities of what they're building are worth checking out).
- Caught another electric Uber that connected to an Auckland Transport hydrogen-powered bus!
- Onwards to The Hotel Britomart - an amazing accommodation experience that also happens to be New Zealand’s only 5 Green Star hotel.
- Dinner at Kingi - great kai from a restaurant that also turns out to be focused on sustainable, local, line-caught seafood.
- Close enough to walk to the venue for the Steven Bartlett Business and Life event.
Sustainable isn’t just about being different or ticking a box.
In many cases it's just better.
In all of the situations above, it was either faster, tastier, quieter, more efficient and as result, more enjoyable.
This is what the modern traveler is looking for (I also like what Singapore Airlines has done to bring a bit of culture and greenery to some bus stops).
So, it's better.
And it's happening now.
Side note: This whole trip was organised by Mountain Club. A lot of people I work with from outside of Queenstown are asking how to work with and build community in Queenstown. The answer I tell them is Mountain Club.
